Data Storytelling in Practice: Going Beyond the Numbers
Tuesday June 23, 2026 10:00am - 10:50am CDT
In a world overflowing with data, the ability to tell a clear, compelling story is what drives real decisions. In this interactive session, participants will discuss practical strategies for transforming raw data into meaningful narratives. We’ll explore common storytelling pitfalls, effective visualization techniques, and how to select the right metrics for the right audience. Expect real examples, open discussion, and tools you can immediately apply in your work.
Additional Information
This session is designed as an interactive discussion rather than a traditional lecture, engaging participants in evaluating real-world data storytelling examples, identifying common pitfalls, and strengthening approaches to metric selection and visualization. Content is drawn from practical experience teaching Data Literacy 101 and 201 at ESC Region 11, focused on building foundational and applied data communication skills for education professionals.

The session will incorporate applied examples from education reporting and dashboard development, including support for district initiatives such as REACH and TEHCY reporting. It also reflects experience in survey design and analysis across student, family, and staff populations, as well as ongoing involvement in Ed-Fi data standardization efforts. Attendees will leave with practical, replicable strategies to improve clarity, consistency, and impact in their own data storytelling.

Ongoing Threats to the E-Rate Program
Tuesday June 23, 2026 11:00am - 11:50am CDT
The federal E-Rate program has been in the political crosshairs as of late. From mobile connectivity to cybersecurity threats, the ever-changing technology landscape creates challenges for schools. Come learn the latest strategies and best practices to protect and maximize your E-Rate funding.
Additional Information
National politics can have a big impact on all federal programs including E-Rate. Within the past two years, the eligibility of Bus Wi-Fi and Mobile Hotspots was added, then removed from the program. It's changes like these that can leave school administrators on the hook for hundreds of thousands of dollars. We anticipate even more changes as the E-Rate program continues to be challenged. It will need to adapt to keep up with technology demands. My goal is to make sure Technology Directors are informed and prepared.

The FCC launched the Cybersecurity Pilot Program in 2025. Over 200 school districts were selected and will receive funding for important tools to help fight cyber-attacks. While not part of the E-Rate program yet, the success of this pilot program could mean more help for technology staff.

During the second half of the session, I will go over the important deadlines and forms required for E-Rate. I use the analogy of filing taxes. You must apply for E-Rate funding every year and there is always a risk for audits. It is challenging working with a federal program, but the tips and strategies participants will learn in this session will give them the confidence to know it is being done right.

CoSN Screen Time Balance Report
Tuesday June 23, 2026 1:30pm - 2:20pm CDT
As screen time concerns continue to shape public conversations about K–12 education, technology leaders need clear, balanced, and practical ways to respond. This session will highlight CoSN’s Screen Time resources and explore how district leaders can reframe the conversation from device minutes to instructional purpose, student well-being, and meaningful learning.

Participants will examine tools and messaging strategies for engaging families, boards, educators, and policymakers in more productive conversations about technology use in schools. The session will also connect these resources to the emerging themes from Purposeful Technology, Powerful Learning: You Can’t Ban Possibility, a national book project focused on districts using technology intentionally to create powerful learning experiences.

Attendees will leave with practical resources and language they can use to lead with nuance, confidence, and clarity.

Content-Aware Filtering in Action: How Texas Districts Stay Ahead
Wednesday June 24, 2026 1:30pm - 2:00pm CDT

Block lists can't keep pace with the speed at which new threats emerge — and Texas K-12 IT teams are feeling that pressure daily. Content-aware filtering takes a fundamentally different approach, scanning text, images, and video at the page level in real time to catch what URL filtering misses: explicit imagery slipping past SafeSearch, inappropriate video segments on approved platforms, harmful content shared inside Google Docs, and proxy sites spun up overnight. This session explores how content-aware filtering is helping Texas districts build a more durable, proactive layer of student protection — without overblocking educational content or adding workload to IT.

Beyond the Basics: Strengthening Your Cybersecurity Posture through Data-Driven Governance
Wednesday June 24, 2026 3:15pm - 4:05pm CDT
K-12 cybersecurity is often reactive, triggered only after an alarm sounds. But what if you could build defenses that prevent the alarm from ever going off? This session explores how Governance, Risk, and Compliance (GRC) frameworks provide a proactive layer to your existing security posture. Using the "cybersecurity onion" model, participants will learn to build resilient, multi-layered systems that protect networks, data, and users. Attendees will leave with practical tools aligned with CIS Controls and the NIST Cybersecurity Framework to strengthen their district’s posture through thoughtful governance and risk management.
Additional Information
This session bridges the gap between technical security and executive leadership by leveraging my experience as a technology leader to provide a roadmap for institutional resilience. Drawing on my background as a CISSP and CCRE, I provide participants with actionable strategies that align directly with national security standards and frameworks. Attendees will gain the governance, risk, and compliance (GRC) tools necessary to transform their district's security posture from a reactive state to a documented proactive, multi-layered defense system.

Wired for Connection: Humanizing Tech through Social Media and Storytelling
Thursday June 25, 2026 1:45pm - 2:35pm CDT

In a department often defined by ticket counts and infrastructure, our most powerful asset remains our people. Northside ISD’s technology department has moved beyond "broadcast mode" to leverage social media as a tool for celebrating staff, demystifying technical roles, and educating our community.

But how does a small team actually make it happen? Join this 50-minute interactive session to pull back the curtain on our content engine. We will share the "origin story" of how we started from scratch, the organizational systems we use to stay consistent, and our monthly delegation workflow that keeps the workload manageable for our department leaders. You’ll also learn how we leverage these social "wins" to build a monthly staff newsletter, ensuring our best stories reach every inbox. Whether you’re a team of one or ten, you’ll leave with a practical blueprint for turning daily operations into a compelling narrative that connects and celebrates.

The Long-Distance Leadership Playbook
Thursday June 25, 2026 2:45pm - 3:40pm CDT
How do you lead a team that you don't see every day?  Do you have staff that work from various locations, making supervision and management challenging?  At Northside ISD, we have frontline tech staff that physically work at campuses, often reporting to a "local" campus administrator while executing "central" technology goals. This dual-report dynamic creates unique challenges for communication, culture, and professional growth.

This session explores a framework for "leading from a distance." We will examine strategies for navigating the partnership between the Technology Department and campus, establishing consistent communication loops, and providing meaningful professional development opportunities for staff who may feel isolated from the core IT team. Whether you are managing five campuses or one hundred, join us to discuss strategies for building a unified departmental culture that empowers decentralized staff to be effective campus liaisons.
Additional Information
Learning Objectives
  • Defining the Role: Establish a clear scope of work that balances campus-specific needs with district-wide technology standards.
  • The Shared Leadership Model: Strategies for collaborating with campus administrators to ensure frontline staff are supported and utilized effectively.
  • Remote Culture & Connection: Practical tactics for keeping off-site staff connected to the department to prevent "silos" and burnout.
  • Flexible PD Tracks: How to design professional development that keeps decentralized teams skilled, engaged, and aligned with ever evolving district initiatives.
